Balance Training For Seniors:  Using Aquatics for Improving and Maintaining ADLs

ADL and Balance Webcast

This webcast will provide treatment ideas for seniors that suffer from balance defecits and subsequent diffculties with their activities of daily living (ADL). It will include a case study of a 76 y.o. female who has undergone several surgeries including bilateral total knee replacements and bilateral foot reconstruction. The demonstration will take place in a HydroWorx 2000 Series pool where we will utilize the underwater treadmill, aquatic jets, and varying depths of water in addition to use of external props to challenge and enhance the patient’s balance.

 

Webcast attendees will learn:

  • Specific protocols for each level of balance training 
  • How to identify progression timing
  • How exercises done using aquatic therapy transfer to land progression
  • How advanced aquatic therapy played a key part in this patient's progress


This 1 hour webcast will be broadcast live from the HydroWorx 2000 Series pool at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Live attendees will have the opportunity to try out the HydroWorx 2000 Series pool. Make sure you bring your bathing suit and towel!

In this webinar participants will receive an introduction to the principles of aquatic therapy, with specific applications for pediatric client populations.  There will be additional focus on physical therapy care planning for children including land to water transitions, treatment considerations, and documentation.

All of this information will be supported by case studies from Cindy’s aquatic therapy program at Children’s Hospital of St. Paul.

SPEAKER BIO:

 

Rachel McDermott graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 1996 with her certification as a Physical Therapy Assistant. She has been a director at multiple clinics and is currently the Director of Rehabilation at Stonehill Care Center, a skilled long term care and outpatient center. She has held this position for 5 years. Rachel’s experience is in skilled nursing rehabilitation and aquatic therapy.

 

Afton Osterberger graduated from Des Moines University with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2011. She has experience in pediatric and geriatric rehabilitation and is certified in Aquatic Therapy through the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute. Afton currently utilizes the HydroWorx pool for patients with a variety of diagnoses including total knee replacements, generalized weakness, hip replacement, patients under weight bearing restrictions and patients who present with balance deficits.
