Influence of an Aquatic Environment on Cognition and Gait

Presented By: Dr. Eadric Bressel, Professor and Clinical Research Scientist in the Sports Medicine Program and Dr. Dennis Dolny, Department Head of Health, Physical Education & Recreation in the College of Education & Human Services at Utah State University

Research Webinar

Research is exploring two big questions about aquatic environments: (1) How does walking in shallow water compare to walking on an underwater treadmill or on land? (2) Does the aquatic environment influence cognition? Answer the first question with a review of research on the biomechanical comparisons of locomotion in water and on land. Learn more about cognition—one of the least studied areas in aquatics therapy—when new research is revealed that links immersion in water to brain activity. You’ll learn why aquatic programming may have additional value for your participants.

Attendees will explore:
  • The biomechanical differences between locomotion on land, in shallow water and on an underwater treadmill.
  • How water immersion influences cognitive function using a dual-task paradigm.

Who will benefit from this webinar:

  • Physical and occupational therapists and assistants
  • Wellness directors and coordinators
  • Aquatics and fitness directors
  • Professors and researchers

In this webinar participants will receive an introduction to the principles of aquatic therapy, with specific applications for pediatric client populations.  There will be additional focus on physical therapy care planning for children including land to water transitions, treatment considerations, and documentation.

Participants will be able take the following away from this presentation:

  • The properties of water that are beneficial for pediatric therapy
  • What pediatric populations can benefit from aquatic therapy
  • What treatment considerations and precautions/contraindications exist for this population
  • How and when to transition between water and land therapy
  • How to effectively document aquatic therapy
  • What equipment can be used to enhance therapy sessions
  • How to make sessions fun for kids

All of this information will be supported by case studies from Cindy’s aquatic therapy program at Children’s Hospital of St. Paul.

What Past Webinar Attendees are Saying:

“I love and appreciate that you are doing this. It is information that I would otherwise not have access to, so I appreciate the format. The speaker was good, and she hit on some things that we could use. Thanks!”

SPEAKER BIO:

Eadric Bressel, PhD, is a professor and clinical research scientist in the Sports Medicine Program at Utah State University (USU) in Logan, UT. His research in aquatics examines neuromechanical adaptations to therapeutic exercise. Bressel holds a doctorate in biomechanics and is a member of the American Society of Biomechanics and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dennis Dolny, PhD, is the Department Head for Health, Physical Education & Recreation in the College of Education & Human Services at Utah State University (USU). He has chaired 10 doctoral committees and published 30 peer-reviewed research articles. Dolny’s laboratory collaborates with USU Sports Medicine examining the role of hydrotherapy in rehabilitation following lower extremity surgical procedures and joint replacement in the elderly.
