Torn Achilles Tendon: An Aquatic Therapy Case Review

In this webinar, Katherine Lorens, Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Utah, will present a case study of the rehabilitation of a Division I gymnast’s torn Achilles tendon using aquatic therapy.

 

Katherine will discuss the overall sports medicine program at the University of Utah and how they use aquatic therapy on a daily basis to treat a multitude of conditions and injuries. She will briefly discuss the properties of water and features of their pools which make them effective tools for the athletes they treat.

 

Katherine will then move on to the torn Achilles tendon case study, beginning by reviewing the case history and injury. She will discuss the timeline of the rehab, including pictures and video of specific exercises and protocols used in the water.

 

She’ll finish the presentation by sharing the outcomes of the athlete’s rehabilitation as well as her astonishing post-recovery achievements.


As a result of attending this webinar, attendees will learn:
  • How they use aquatic therapy on a daily basis to treat a multitude of conditions and injuries.
  • The properties of water and features of their pools.
  • Specific exercises and protocols used in the water for the rehab of the torn Achilles tendon.

Katherine’s presentation will be followed by a 15-20 minute Q&A session which will allow the audience to ask the presenter questions relative to the case study and her experience with aquatics.

SPEAKER BIO:

Katherine Lorens is an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Utah. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology and Athletic Training from the University of Illinois. She received a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Illinois State where she also worked as a graduate assistant with the gymnastics team. From there she went on to work at the University of California, Berkeley with the football team and men's and women's gymnastics teams. In her current position at the University of Utah, she works with the women's gymnastics team and oversees the graduate assistants for the volleyball team. Katherine is certified in the Graston Technique and teaches a graduate class certifying students in Graston Technique and teaching manual therapy.
